The OSSU PreK-12 Arts program fosters students' creative potential and develops an understanding of the arts and other forms of visual culture, while promoting creative and critical thinking.
Learning Principles
What are the Best practices in instruction and learning for student in art?
For each one what should we expect to see the students doing and what should we see the teachers doing?
Learning Principles for Teaching Science
- Students learn art concepts best when they are actively engaged in a hands on inquiry based process. Therefore we will provide opportunities for students to engage with materials, to explore through the creative process and to critique work based on evidence.
- Students develop deeper understanding when given opportunities to communicate artistically. Therefore students will be provided the opportunity to construct their understandings and ideas through multimedia materials, purposeful conversations, and receive relevant assessments.
- Students learn best when given the opportunity to identify prior knowledge and refine and confront current understandings. Therefore students will be provided the opportunity to formulate new knowledge by modifying and adding to their understanding of concepts that in turn will guide instruction.
- Students are able to transfer arts knowledge best when provided the opportunity to relate personal experiences to broader concepts for a deeper understanding. Therefore students will be provided with curriculum and instruction that is guided by broad concepts and will be provided with opportunities to transfer their arts learning to new contexts.
- Students gain visual literacy when provided the opportunity to be taught using common language, skills, and content on a continuum from K-12. Therefore students will be provided the opportunity to be taught a vertically aligned curriculum and instruction.
- Students develop a deeper understanding of art content when assessments are intentional and ongoing. Therefore teachers and students will engage in: ongoing and formative assessment aligned to enduring understandings and grade level benchmarks.
